Half the term…twice the fun!

Posted on | 0 Comments

With half-term just around the corner, we thought we’d share a few of our favourite fun ideas guaranteed to help keep the kids entertained.

ice skating

Ice, ice baby

Why not wrap up warm, swap your shoes for blades and go ice skating?  Most ice rinks offer family sessions with skate hire inclusive.  Some even have disco options if you fancying pulling a few moves on the ice with night time skating…..time to unleash the inner Torvill or Dean and show the kids how its done?!

for play

BYOB game party!

A what party I hear you say?  Bring your own board game!  If the weather takes a turn for the worse then why not invite a few friends over but they have to bring their own board games.  No more “I’m bored of my board games!” as the kids can try something new.  Chuck in some popcorn and maybe even create a tournament style leaderboard and you’ve got yourself a house full of entertained kids (and hopefully some well deserved peace and quiet!).

Not too cool for the pool

Swimming is a great way to have fun as a family as well as keep active and practise those all important life-saving skills.  Why not see what’s going on this half term at your local leisure centre or health club, many will offer family fun sessions for that extra splash factor.  Find your nearest pool with this handy pool finder and check out some of these great games to play whilst in the water.

After dusk frolics

Make the most of these dark nights whilst they’re here, wrap up warm, grab a flashlight and explore your neighbourhood after dusk.  With a YUUbag on their backs they can stay safe thanks to the reflectivity panels on the front and back so why not fill up their YUUbag with some snacks and glow sticks and let their imaginations run wild.  Check out these fun ideas for games in the dark.

Get your Geocache on!

This is such a fun family activity that enables your young explorer to discover new and exciting surroundings in your local area.  If you’re new to the world of geocaching this website gives a great overview to help get you started.

So time to fill up that YUUbag and get out and about this half-term!  Why not share your plans and inspire others by commenting below.

Have fun,

Team YUU x

YUU bag in Lapland 2

This is a heartfelt THANK YUU to our lovely customers who bought a 7-gifts-in-1 YUUbag bundle as it helped our charity partner Starlight to fund a magical trip to Lapland for 14 seriously ill children and their families.

Just before Christmas 14 Starlight Wish children and their parents set off to try and find Father Christmas in Lapland.  For many this truly was a trip of a lifetime.  The children and families built snowmen, rode through the forest on a husky drawn sleigh, met the reindeer, played with elves and, of course met Father Christmas himself.

Watch the magic unfold as the children enjoy a trip of a lifetime…

Elizabeth, mum of four-year-old Isla who is in remission from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and wished to meet Santa, said,

“The Lapland experience with Starlight gave us four days of unadulterated happiness, joy and shared celebration. After two and a half years of heartache and desperate moments, the trip has given us the most magical and wonderful moments that will live with us forever.”

YUU also provided all children travelling, including siblings, with a YUUbag to help keep the children entertained on their trip.

Thank YUU x

YUU joins forces with Starlight to give seriously ill children a Happy Christmas

Starlight Wish child Amy meets one of Santa’s elves on last year’s Lapland Wish Trip

We are proud to announce Starlight Children’s Foundation as our official charity partner.  Starlight brightens the lives of seriously and terminally ill children by granting wishes and providing fun and entertainment in hospital wards and hospices throughout the UK.  YUU love making children smile too which is why we are delighted to announce Starlight as our official charity partner.

For most children, Christmas is their single favourite time of the year, a time awaited with much excitement and anticipation. Unfortunately, over 100,000 will spend time in hospital this Christmas. Being in hospital can be a daunting and often scary experience for young patients, and equally hard for brothers, sisters and worried parents too, particularly over the festive season.

We believe that every child deserves to have a happy Christmas. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Starlight to help raise funds for their Lapland wish trip.

Every year Starlight sends a group of seriously ill children and their families on a magical wish trip to meet Father Christmas in Lapland. YUU will help fund this wish trip by donating £1 from every Christmas bundle sold during 10th November to 24th December. The bundle consists of a YUUbag and six accessories.

During their stay, the families get to enjoy breath-taking rides through the forest on a sleigh pulled by a team of huskies, riding on snowmobiles, building snowmen, meeting the reindeer and, of course, the highlight of the trip… meeting Father Christmas!

The Lapland wish trip provides a wonderful escape for the brave children fighting and living with life-limiting conditions, their families and siblings. The trip is a real bonding experience for the families and children involved; the parents relax and enjoy spending time with other adults who understand what they’ve been going through and the children become really good friends and enjoy the magic of being a child again.

In addition to making donations for every Christmas bundle sold, YUU are also gifting all Starlight children and their siblings going on the Lapland wish trip with a YUUbag to provide fun and distraction whilst travelling.

You can support Starlight by adding your own donation via our checkout page or by visiting the charity’s own website.

Our top 10 boredom beating games

Here’s a few of our favourite games that are sure to pass some travel time and keep everyone entertained. These don’t require anything other than imagination so are great fun and easy to play wherever you are!

Our top 10 boredom beating games

Here’s a few of our favourite games that are sure to pass some travel time and keep everyone entertained. These don’t require anything other than imagination so are great fun and easy to play wherever you are!

1) I Spy – a classic for all ages. “I spy with my little eye something beginning with…”

2) Colour I spy – a variation on the original but rather than naming the first letter, players name a colour. E.g. “I spy with my little eye something coloured red”

3) Hum a tune – hum a tune to the group and if they work out what it is they become the hummer. Make it harder for older kids by requiring the name of the song and the artist.

4) The alphabet game – choose a category (e.g. animals) and then take turns to name something in that category beginning with every letter of the alphabet.

5) The A-Z game – this one gets very tricky! Someone starts by saying “I’m so hungry I could eat an apple”. The next person adds something beginning with B, e.g. “I’m so hungry I could eat an apple and a balloon” and so on through the alphabet. Can you get all the way to Z?!

6) Buzz – players take turns counting starting at 1. Everytime a number is reached that is divisible by 7 or has a 7 in it, the player needs to say “Buzz” instead of the number. If someone forgets it’s back to 1 again!

7) The Yes or No game – one person is asked questions but can’t answer using “Yes” or “No”. If they do then it’s someone else’s turn to resist the temptation!

8) Story telling – someone starts telling a story. They have to speak without hesitation for one minute and when their minute is up the next person has to pick up where they left off. Perhaps the next best selling novel will be created?!

9) Word Associations – a fun and fast game where one person picks any word (be as obscure as you like!) and the next person has to say the first word that comes into their head linked to this. Keep going round until someone falters then start a new word.

10)Who am I – pick a category (e.g. animals, famous singers etc) and one person thinks of something within that category. Other players ask questions and can only receive a yes or no answer until they correctly guess. To vary this, the player who picks could describe and the others can guess.
